This was followed in February 2019 by a manifesto called "Trumpism, Nationalism and Conservatism" in the Claremont Review of Books. In it, DeMuth argued that a new "era of intellectual reformulation is underway" for American conservatism in light of the "nationalist revival."

DeMuth counts three eras in post-war US conservatism: The first was led by William Buckley in the 1950s. The second was established by neoconservatives such as Irving Kristol in the 1970s. Now a third era, that of "conservative nationalism," has begun. DeMuth calls to embrace it.

In fact, the National Conservatism Conference next week marks the moment in which the "intellectual reformulation" of conservatism that DeMuth described in his essays takes its first step out into the open as a coherent movement.

DeMuth is right: A new era of national conservatism is coming in the U.S., UK, and other democratic countries. The desperate attacks of those who'd like to see us marching toward universal liberal empire don't matter. Our job now is to do a good job rethinking conservatism.
